The Nantucket Boys Varsity Soccer team is coming to the end of another exciting and productive season. With the playoffs rapidly approaching, they end their season with an outstanding record of 15 wins, 2 loses, and 2 ties.
Junior captain Emmet Clarke explains that their main goal is “ to make a long run in playoffs, and hopefully challenge for the sectionals.” In the past years, they have been very successful in accomplishing that goal and have gotten very far in the playoffs and hope to keep the streak going.
Senior captain Carter Snell explained that their goals as a team for the rest of the season is to “ learn to adapt to the more difficult opponents we are going to face and play our best in order to win. As a team I think we have excelled in our ability to play new positions when needed and maintain our style of play. I think we can improve on our cooperation on the field regarding communication and discipline.”
The team has been very consistent at holding the ball and controlling games, but sometimes struggle to secure the win and have had some unlucky draws. There are many new upcoming players this year that have consistently improved as a whole. This season they have a very young team. Some of the new upcoming players are sophomore defender Charlie Clarke, sophomore backup goalie Jesus, sophomore striker Jackson Milne, sophomore striker Derek Partida and freshman offender Gavin Pekarcik.
One of their all time rivals is the one and only, Martha’s Vineyard. There is a healthy competition between the islands. Earlier this season after a long traveling day to the Vineyard, the boys were able to walk away with a win. This triumphant defeat over the Vineyard was their first one in the last 5 years. Their most difficult competition this year would have to be Cohasset. They have been undefeated this season and will be the Whalers upcoming opponents in the playoffs.
The team believes that to beat them and move on in the playoffs, they must play their game and not get sucked into Cohasset’s style of play. By doing this and playing their best they believe that they will be able to beat Cohasset and move forward in the playoffs. The team hopes to continue on with an amazing season and end with another state championship.
